When most people look at a jar of Manuka honey, they assume all premium honey is produced in much the same way.

Bees collect nectar, beekeepers harvest the honey, and it ends up on the shelf.

Around the world, commercial beekeepers face an ongoing battle against pests and diseases that threaten the health of their hives.

Some treatments, such as Apivar Strips, contain amitraz, a synthetic miticide used to control Varroa mite. Amitraz can accumulate in beeswax over time, making wax management an important part of hive health.

Antibiotics such as oxytetracycline hydrochloride are used to treat European Foulbrood in some regions. While approved for use under regulations, consumers seeking to minimise exposure to antibiotic residues may prefer honey produced without the need for these treatments. 

This may be particularly relevant for people with certain antibiotic sensitivities or those wishing to avoid unnecessary exposure.
